From Barter: to Money
Explore how people exchanged goods before money, understand the difficulties of barter, and discover how money evolved from early forms of exchange to coins, paper currency and digital payments.
Chapter at a Glance
Before money came into use, people exchanged goods and services directly through the barter system. Barter, however, created difficulties such as the need for a double coincidence of wants, lack of a common measure of value, indivisibility, poor portability and limited durability.
As trade expanded, money emerged as a convenient medium of exchange. Over time, money evolved from various forms of goods and metallic coins to paper currency and today’s digital forms of payment.
