What Happened?

🌾 Rabi MSPs Raised for 2027–28

On 30 September 2026, the Union Cabinet approved higher Minimum Support Prices (MSPs) for all six mandated Rabi crops for the 2027–28 marketing season: wheat, barley, gram, lentil (masur), rapeseed-mustard and safflower.

The biggest absolute increase was for safflower at ₹675 per quintal, followed by rapeseed and mustard at ₹413. Wheat MSP rose by ₹25 to ₹2,610 per quintal. The government estimated an MSP payout of about ₹90,962 crore.

🌱 Green Energy Corridor Phase-III

The Union Cabinet also approved the Green Energy Corridor Phase-III (GEC-III) with a total outlay of ₹1,86,405 crore. The scheme is designed to strengthen intra-state transmission and enable evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy by FY 2032–33.

A major component is 50 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The storage is intended to improve grid flexibility, manage renewable-energy intermittency and help meet demand during non-solar hours.

📱 Apple Pay Launches in India

Apple announced on 30 September 2026 that Apple Pay is now available in India on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, with Mac support coming soon. At launch, eligible Axis Bank Visa and Mastercard credit cards can be added to Apple Pay.

Apple said the service supports contactless payments at thousands of merchants and uses tokenisation and device security rather than sharing the user’s actual card number with merchants.

🏅 Asian Games 2026

At the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, Indian athletes had a major medal day on 30 September, winning four gold medals—three in compound archery and one in the mixed trap team event in shooting. India’s women’s hockey team also reached the final after defeating South Korea 2–0.

On 1 October, India has further important fixtures, including cricket and hockey semi-finals, along with events in squash, wrestling and shooting.

Know the Concept

What is MSP?

Minimum Support Price (MSP) is a government-announced price intended to provide farmers a minimum remunerative return for specified agricultural crops. The Rabi MSP decision relates to the 2027–28 marketing season.

What is a Green Energy Corridor?

A Green Energy Corridor is transmission infrastructure designed to help move electricity generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind to the wider power grid.

What is Battery Energy Storage?

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) store electricity for later use. In a renewable-heavy grid, storage can help balance supply when generation from sources such as solar changes during the day.

What is Tokenisation in Digital Payments?

Payment tokenisation replaces sensitive card details with a unique token used for transactions, helping reduce the need to share the actual card number with a merchant.

India Connection 🇮🇳

🌾 AgricultureThe Rabi MSP decision affects six important crops and is linked with farm incomes, procurement and crop diversification.
🌱 Energy TransitionGEC-III is intended to strengthen India’s power grid so more renewable electricity can be transmitted and stored.
📱 Digital EconomyApple Pay’s India launch expands payment choices while using card-network tokenisation and contactless technology.
🏅 SportsIndian athletes are competing across multiple disciplines at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games and entered October after a strong medal day.

Competency-Based Questions 🧩

Q1. Why might the government give a larger MSP increase to oilseeds and pulses than to wheat?
Answer: Higher support for pulses and oilseeds can encourage crop diversification and help reduce dependence on imported edible oils and other commodities.
Q2. Why is battery storage important when a country adds large amounts of solar and wind power?
Answer: Renewable generation can vary with sunlight and weather. Storage can hold electricity and release it when generation is lower or demand is higher.
Q3. A student says, “Building renewable-energy plants is enough for an energy transition.” Do you agree? Explain.
Answer: No. Generation must be supported by transmission and storage infrastructure so renewable electricity can reach consumers reliably and be balanced when generation fluctuates.
Q4. How does Apple Pay’s use of tokenisation improve the security of card payments?
Answer: Tokenisation allows a transaction to use a unique substitute for the actual card number, reducing the need to share the sensitive card number with the merchant.
Q5. What does India’s Asian Games performance show about the importance of multi-sport events for a country?
Answer: Such events provide opportunities to demonstrate sporting talent, compete internationally, build confidence and strengthen cultural and sporting exchange among countries.

Teacher’s Corner 👩‍🏫

Use today’s current affairs to connect textbook concepts of agriculture, government policy, renewable energy, digital technology, cybersecurity and international sports with real-world developments.

Classroom Discussion

“Can a country achieve a clean-energy transition without investing in transmission and storage? Why or why not?”

Activity

Ask students to make a table comparing MSP, renewable-energy transmission, battery storage and digital-payment tokenisation, and write one benefit and one possible challenge for each.

Think & Discuss

Ask students to explain how government decisions can affect farmers, electricity consumers and digital-payment users in their everyday lives.
